What Exactly can an Earthmover Do?

The earthmover lives up to its name as one of the most important pieces of equipment for construction and mining purposes. You’re in the right place if you’d like to know about the uses and types of earthmovers available to you, and whether it is suitable for the needs of your project.

What is the earthmover used for?

The devil is in the name – an earthmover is a heavy-duty machine used to capture and transport soil, rocks, and earth from one place to another, push materials, dig, and level earth.

Some come with a range of attachments that can be changed depending on the setting, while others are designed to remain in place.

What are the types of earthmoving equipment on the Sunshine Coast that are available to me?

Excavator

With its ability to easily excavate a range of materials including timber, rocks and earth easily, this machinery is commonly found on larger construction or industrial sites. Its well-known feature is a crooked arm with a bucket extending from the cab.

There are several types of excavators for you to choose from:

• Utility excavators
• Construction excavators
• Mining excavators
• Wheeled excavators
• Reduced-tail-swing excavators

Backhoe loader

Considered the perfect combination of excavator and a front loader machine, this beauty is usually found on agricultural and construction sites and offers a broad range of uses – from digging pits and breaking up asphalt to moving trees and ploughing dirt and snow.

Bulldozer

A dozer is a high-powered, diesel tractor with a curved hydraulic blade at the front. Thanks to its track, the bulldozer successfully moves across muddy and rough land and fulfils its primary function to push mountains of dirt, rocks, waste around.

When it’s taking a break from pushing, dozers can use their sheer brute to pull items like heavy equipment and trailers.

Trencher

We bet you can guess the function of this earthmover. Yes, that’s right - it’s designed to create trenches. A trencher will tear deeply into the ground, clearing out rocks and soil or anything else that you want removing.

Wheel tractor-scraper

With a sharp front edge to cut materials and a rear hopper to store them, a wheel tractor-scraper is perfect to carry dirt, coal, or earth over short distances.

There are several types of wheel tractor-scrapers for you to choose from:

• Elevating scrapers
• Towed scrapers
• Open bowl scrapers

Dump trucks

This machine is usually seen in an urban setting as dump trucks are universally known to collect garbage from residences and businesses. The top of the truck then tilts to dump the trash into a landfill site or waste management facility.

Did you know that some of the largest dump trucks can also be used to move earth from construction and mining sites?
